A Message Regarding Service League Scholarships in 2026

For many years, the Service League of Cherokee County has proudly awarded need-based scholarships each spring to graduating seniors from high schools within the Cherokee County School District. These scholarships have recognized students for their financial need, academic achievement, and involvement in extracurricular activities. The number and amount of scholarships have traditionally been determined each year by the League’s executive leadership and have depended on funds raised through our annual fundraisers.

However, as we move into 2026, we want to share an important update with our community.

The Service League is currently experiencing a significant and sustained increase in casework requests from families across Cherokee County. Casework is the heart of our mission. Through this work, we provide direct assistance to children and families facing urgent challenges, including help with basic needs, utilities, housing support, dental and vision care, and other essential services. The growing demand we are seeing reflects real and immediate hardships affecting local families.

After thoughtful discussion and careful consideration, our leadership and league as a whole have made the difficult decision to pause the scholarship program for 2026. This step allows us to focus our financial resources and volunteer efforts where the need is most critical right now; ensuring that children in crisis have safe housing, lights on at home, access to vision and dental care, and other necessities that support their well-being.

This was not an easy decision. Supporting students in their educational journeys remains deeply important to us. We are incredibly proud of the scholarship recipients we have supported over the years and hopeful that we will be able to resume this program in the future as circumstances allow.

We are grateful to our donors, volunteers, and community partners whose generosity makes our work possible. Your continued support helps us respond when families are at their most vulnerable and ensures we can remain a lifeline for children in Cherokee County.

Together, we remain committed to our core mission: meeting children’s most basic needs and strengthening families in times of hardship.

Grateful for Our 2026 Service League Gala & Benefit Sponsors

We extend our sincere gratitude to the sponsors of the 2026 Service League Gala & Benefit. The Service League’s mission is made possible through the generosity of businesses and community partners who believe in investing in the lives of children right here in Cherokee County.

The Gala may be a night of entertainment, fine dining, and connection, but its true significance goes far beyond the event. Gala sponsorships play a vital role in helping us fulfill our purpose: supporting children in need and strengthening families throughout our community.

Because of our sponsors, we can continue longstanding programs, respond to emerging needs, and ensure that local children have access to the resources, care, and opportunities they deserve. Their commitment reflects the very best of Cherokee County: compassion, leadership, and a shared desire to make a difference.

To each of our 2026 sponsors, thank you for standing beside the Service League and the children we serve. Your partnership changes lives, and we are deeply grateful for your continued support.

A Heart for Children: Marcie Smith Receives 2026 Heritage of Hope Award

The Service League of Cherokee County has named Marcie Smith, Executive Director of The Children’s Haven, as the recipient of the 2026 Annual Heritage of Hope Award, recognizing her extraordinary dedication to children and families in need.

Smith leads The Children’s Haven, a nonprofit serving children impacted by abuse and neglect and families at risk. Her work is deeply personal. As the daughter of a former Department of Family and Children Services caseworker, she grew up witnessing the realities faced by vulnerable children, experiences that shaped her lifelong calling to protect children and strengthen families. She often jokes that despite earning a degree in International Relations, working in child welfare “is in her DNA.”

Under Smith’s leadership, The Children’s Haven has expanded programs, strengthened services, and deepened community partnerships. In 2024 alone, the organization served more than 500 families, conducted over 1,300 in-home visits through prevention programs, and supported 345 children in foster care through CASA advocacy. She launched initiatives such as the Positive Childhood Alliance of Cherokee County and the CHIN UP mentorship program, while also expanding visitation services and caregiver support resources.

Known for her hands-on servant leadership, Smith regularly steps beyond her executive role through staffing visitations on weekends, transporting families to after-hours programs, and responding to needs at any hour. Her impact extends beyond her organization. Smith serves on the Georgia CASA Board and has held leadership roles within the Rotary Club of Canton, mobilizing volunteers and strengthening community partnerships. Whether professionally or civically, her focus remains the same: ensuring children experience safety, stability, and hope. Through her compassion, leadership, and relentless commitment, Marcie Smith embodies the very spirit of the award and the future she is working every day to build for children.

The League also recognized two outstanding finalists for the 2026 award: Dr. Debra Murdock and Chief Eddie Robinson, both respected leaders whose service and commitment have made meaningful contributions to the well-being of the Cherokee County community.

The Service League of Cherokee County presents the Heritage of Hope Award to honor individuals whose service brings lasting, positive change to the lives of children and families in the community. The award recognizes leaders who go beyond their professional roles to demonstrate compassion, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to strengthening families, protecting children, and building a more hopeful future for Cherokee County. Through this recognition, the League also seeks to inspire others to serve and to shine a light on the powerful impact one person’s dedication can have on an entire community.

Three Finalists Chosen for the 2026 Heritage of Hope Award

The Service League of Cherokee County is proud to announce the three finalists for the 2026 Heritage of Hope Award. Following an outpouring of nominations from community members, the Service League has selected Dr. Debra Murdock, Mrs. Marcie Smith, and Fire Chief Eddie Robinson as this year’s finalists.

The Heritage of Hope Award was established to recognize an individual whose time, talents, and dedication have made a meaningful and lasting impact on the lives of children in the Cherokee County community. Each of these individuals demonstrates a deep commitment to supporting children in need and inspiring hope within our community.

Our Finalists

As a Cherokee County native, a graduate of Cherokee High School, and a lifelong educator, Dr. Murdock’s roots in this community run deep, but her impact on its future runs even deeper. Compassionate leadership is what led Dr. Murdock, a science teacher at E.T. Booth Middle School, to become the Chief Operations Officer of the Cherokee County School District, and it is a testament to her excellence. She has spent her career being a voice for the voiceless, proving that leadership is not about the title you hold, but about the people you lift up.

Dr. Debra Murdock embodies the spirit of the Service League. She has dedicated her life to ensuring that every child in Cherokee County, regardless of their background or struggles, has a champion.

Marcie Smith serves as the Executive Director of The Children’s Haven in Cherokee County, a role that reflects both her professional calling and personal purpose. Raised with firsthand insight into the challenges facing vulnerable children, she developed a lifelong commitment to protecting children, strengthening families, and building a community where every child can thrive.

Marcie leads with a clear mission to promote the health and well-being of children impacted by abuse. Through her service with Georgia CASA, leadership in the Rotary Club of Canton, and continued work with the Salem Camp Meeting, she exemplifies civic responsibility. Her time, voice, and leadership are all dedicated to creating a safer, stronger, and more hopeful future for children.

Chief Eddie Robinson has dedicated nearly 30 years to serving Cherokee County as a firefighter, leader, and source of hope for children and families in need. A U.S. Army veteran and cancer survivor, he understands the power of perseverance and compassion, using his personal journey to inspire children facing serious illness.

Beyond his role as Fire Chief, Chief Robinson is deeply committed to supporting and mentoring the next generation through youth programs, school fire safety education, and advocacy for children battling life-threatening diseases. His life and leadership reflect faith, service, and hope in action.

While this award reflects the mission of the Service League of Cherokee County and honors the collective ten years of service represented by its one hundred members, current Service League members and Awards Committee members are not eligible for consideration. These finalists have consistently exemplified compassion and selfless service through their dedication to a single organization or through involvement in multiple volunteer efforts that positively impact children. They serve as outstanding role models, leading by example and working tirelessly to make Cherokee County a better place for children in need.

The recipient of the 2026 Heritage of Hope Award will be announced at the Service League of Cherokee County’s Annual Gala and Benefit for the Children on January 31, 2026, at Timbers on Etowah in Canton, Georgia. The event begins at 6:00 p.m. and includes dinner, dancing, a silent auction, and raffles. In addition, the League will recognize Service League members who are completing their 10-year commitment.

Tickets for the Service League of Cherokee County’s Annual Gala and Benefit for the Children are $150 per person and may be purchased here.

The Service League of Cherokee County Celebrates Impact and Service at 2025 Annual Luncheon

Service League members who have served 10 years in the League. Front Row L-R: Allyson Tanner, Katlyn Thacker, Stacy Arnold, and Marcelle Robustelli. Back Row L-R: Laura Nicholas, Mary Roehl, Gwen Chambers, Leah Bleisath, and Kathy Maher.

The Service League of Cherokee County gathered this month to celebrate another remarkable year of service during its 2025 Annual Luncheon. The event honored members’ enduring dedication to improving the lives of children across Cherokee County, shared highlights from the 2024–2025 League year, and welcomed a new class of provisional members. Nine exceptional ladies were recognized for 10 years of unwavering dedication and service to the children of Cherokee County.

During the luncheon, League President Melissa Wehunt reflected on the organization’s 89th year. “For 89 years, the Service League of Cherokee County has remained steadfast in its mission to improve the lives of children in our community. This year, our members gave 4,735.56 hours of volunteer service and gave over $129,000 to meet critical needs—proving that even in challenging times, our commitment never wavers.”

In a powerful display of community engagement, the League’s key events—including the 6th Annual Golfing FORE! the Children tournament, the 21st Annual Run for the Children, and the 4th Annual Gala & Benefit—successfully united sponsors, families, and volunteers to support the League’s mission. Despite the cancellation of Riverfest due to Hurricane Helene, the League saw a remarkable outpouring of support from local partners and businesses who organized alternative fundraisers.

At the heart of the League’s mission is casework. Over 300 requests for assistance were received this year, providing children with essentials like emergency dental care, eyeglasses, rent and utility support, and access to medical care. President-Elect and Casework Chair Stephanie Barber shared the story of one family who, amidst recovery from addiction and financial instability, received emergency utility support that kept them safe during the summer heat. “That’s the heart of our work,” said Barber. “We’re not just meeting needs—we’re showing up in the moments that matter most.”

The luncheon also recognized outstanding League members. Jaimie Sims was named the 2024–2025 League Member of the Year for her extraordinary dedication and service. Guest speaker and honorary member Rebecca Johnston delivered a heartfelt message celebrating the League’s impact and legacy.

A special tribute was given to nine members celebrating a decade of service: Stacy Arnold, Leah Bleisath, Gwen Chambers, Kathy Maher, Laura Nicholas, Marcelle Robustelli, Mary Roehl, Allyson Tanner, and Katlyn Thacker. Together, these women have volunteered nearly 8,000 hours and exemplify the leadership and heart of the Service League.

The League also proudly welcomed 14 new provisional members who began their journey in March and will serve the community over the next year before full induction: Stephanie Lowry, Erin Richardson, Dawn Starnes, Chelsie Stehlik, Leslie Thames, Maria Allison, Shyronne Avery, Heather Crachi, Lauren Day, Ellie Hammonds, Georgie Hathcock, Keri Fabiano, Amanda Gergans, and Daylan Greene. Their commitment ensures the League’s legacy continues to thrive.

As the Service League of Cherokee County approaches its 90th year, it does so with renewed purpose, gratitude, and momentum. “We are deeply honored to continue this longstanding tradition,” said Wehunt. “It’s not just a legacy—it’s a promise. And we’re keeping that promise, one child at a time.”
