Service League of Cherokee County Awards 4th Annual Heritage of Hope Award to Janet Read Welch

The Service League of Cherokee County is thrilled to announce that Janet Read Welch has been honored with the prestigious 4th Annual Heritage of Hope Award. The award was presented during the Service League’s Annual Gala and Benefit held on January 25, 2025, at Timbers at the Mill on Etowah.
This award recognizes individuals whose extraordinary service and dedication significantly and
positively impact the lives of children in Cherokee County. Janet Read Welch was selected from
an inspiring group of finalists, including Carrie Minicozzi,  Buster Cushing, and Courtney Lott, all
of whom demonstrate remarkable commitment to fostering hope and creating lasting change for
children in our community.
About the Finalists
Carrie Minicozzi has dedicated 18 years to teaching children with special needs at East Side
Elementary, specializing in supporting students with behavioral challenges, autism, and learning
difficulties. Her classroom is a sanctuary where children feel safe, loved, and valued, inspiring
them to thrive academically and emotionally. Outside of her work, Carrie actively volunteers at
Woodstock City Church, mentoring middle schoolers and leading a moms’ small group. Her
efforts extend to tutoring and community outreach, where she instills in her own children the
importance of serving others, making a profound difference in the lives of her students and their
families.
Buster Cushing, Chief of School Police for Cherokee County School District, provides
steadfast leadership during challenging times for law enforcement. With a career spanning
decades, including years of service with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Buster is a
constant source of strength and support for the community. His dedication extends beyond his
profession; he serves on the Cherokee County DFCS board, participates in the CHIN UP
mentoring program, and is active in civic organizations such as the Canton Optimist and Rotary
Clubs. Buster’s impact reaches families through his personal commitment to ensuring every
child feels seen, valued, and protected.
Courtney Lott is the founder and owner of FACS Adoption LLC, a Cherokee County-based
agency connecting children with loving families. As the adoptive mother of six children, several
with special needs, Courtney’s life exemplifies selfless devotion to others. Her advocacy
extends to her children’s schools, where she ensures her daughters with special needs receive
the support they need to thrive. Courtney’s dedication inspires others, paving the way for all
children to have access to a nurturing and inclusive environment.
Heritage of Hope Winner
Janet Read Welch, this year’s recipient, has dedicated more than 30 years to serving Cherokee
County’s children with passion and commitment. From her work as a PTA leader and substitute
teacher to her service as a Cherokee County School Board member and chair, Janet has
consistently championed the well-being of children. Her influence extends through her work with
organizations like Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and The Children’s Haven. Teachers describe
her as a compassionate mentor, quietly supporting classrooms with essential resources and care. Janet’s servant leadership has transformed countless lives, embodying the spirit of hope and service that this award represents.
